Why this site exists
You’ve got a seed packet in your hand—maybe one you saved from last year, maybe one you bought on impulse—and you’re not sure if it’ll grow. The soil is too hard, the light is wrong, or the instructions assume you already know what to do.
The ones that work are often buried under layers of advice that doesn’t fit your space.
This site cuts through that. Every tip, every plant profile, every troubleshooting guide is tested in real soil, under real conditions. No jargon, no guesswork. Just what actually works, and why.
Who writes this site
Meet Vince Barrera, the one who plants things and then writes about it.
Do you test everything yourself?
Mostly. I grow what I write about—even the mistakes. But I’ll admit, some of the weirdest fixes (like the time compost tea saved my peppers) came from other gardeners who’d already lost their minds trying.
What do you get wrong?
I still forget to harden off seedlings before transplanting. And yes, I’ve killed basil by overpotting it. The good news? Those are the things I write about now.
Why isn’t plant X here?
Either I haven’t grown it yet, or it didn’t survive my first attempt. If it’s a common garden plant and I haven’t written about it, it’s because I’m still figuring it out—or it’s already in the ‘don’t bother’ pile.
I keep a small notebook in my back pocket for garden notes—soil pH, when to prune, what the squirrels stole. It’s dog-eared, stained, and full of question marks.
How a plant profile is built
It starts with a seed in the ground—or a cutting in water—and ends with a note on what worked, what didn’t, and why. No assumptions.
The first trial
I plant it. I water it. I watch it. If it thrives, I note the soil, light, and care routine. If it dies, I dig up the corpse and ask why. Every plant gets at least one full season before it’s written about.
The fixes
The second time, I adjust. More shade? Less water? A different soil mix? I keep tweaking until it either grows or I accept defeat. Some plants make the list. Some don’t.
What we will not do
This site won’t sell you anything you can’t grow yourself. No affiliate links to fancy tools, no ads for seeds you didn’t ask for. If it’s not tested in real dirt, it’s not here.

- ‘Quick fixes’ for failing plants (they don’t exist).
- Plants that thrive only in perfect conditions (real gardens aren’t perfect).
- Step-by-step guides for things that haven’t been tried yet.
- Photos of plants that look better in a catalog than in your backyard.
Where to start
Start with the ‘Beginner’s Guide’ if you’re new. Browse by plant if you’re looking for something specific. If you can’t find what you need, check the ‘Troubleshooting’ section—chances are, someone else has already asked the same question.
